How Healthy Is Your Protein Powder?

Is Your Protein Powder Inhibiting Your Fitness Goals?

I am a huge advocate for getting enough protein in your diet and, especially if you follow a predominantly plant-based diet, protein powders are integral for getting enough daily protein intake.

However, not all protein powders are created equally! In fact, some are really created just to make sales and not to positively impact your health whatsoever. Lots of protein powders can contain a long list of ingredients that do not serve your workouts and definitely don’t serve your overall health. These ingredients include sugar, unnecessary empty calories and even toxic chemicals.

What Is Protein Powder?

protein powder

Protein powders are forms of protein that come in a powdered form – literally what it says on the tin. Plant-based proteins come from rice, pea, hemp, soybeans, or potatoes. Whilst, non-plant-based powders are casein or whey, which comes from eggs or milk. Some powders may include beneficial added ingredients such as vitamins and minerals, whilst some may include ingredients that do the opposite of benefiting your health, such as artificial flavouring, thickeners and large servings of sugar.

In fact, in 2020 researchers screened 134 protein powder products for 140 types of toxins and found that a large amount contained heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, bisphenol-A (BPA, used to make toxic plastic and known to be carcinogenic), pesticides and other toxic chemicals which have all been linked to chronic health conditions and cancer. These weren’t just traces either, they were found in significant quantities – one protein powder contained 25x the allowed limit of BPA! It is truly shocking.
